Abstract

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

On behalf of the Organization Committee and the School of Engineering of the University of Mississippi, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2013 Mid-South Area Engineering and Science conference. To our friends outside Oxford, I extend a special welcome. Oxford is the cultural center of Northern Mississippi and home-town of novelists William Faulkner and John Grisham. For more than fifteen years, MAESC was largely hosted by Christian Brothers University in Memphis under the name Memphis Area Engineering and Science Conference. This is the second time that University of Mississippi hosts this conference. The Mid-South Annual Engineering and Science Conference serves as a forum to bring together scientists, engineers and professional from southern states to present and discuss the latest research and development in science, technology, and engineering. The scope of the conference is broad, and for this reason is somewhat unique among present day conferences, which tend to be focused on special areas.

This year’s MAESC aims to bridge the gap between recent advances in research and fast growing industrial needs and challenges. MAESC2013 is dedicated to accelerate the nuance research and technology transfer to improve the mid-south competitiveness in the area of science, technology, and engineering. This forum will help in providing a wealth of practical information for innovators researchers and practitioners to develop new products, processes, and technologies. The technical program committee, under the leadership of professors Ahmed Al-Ostaz (University of Mississippi) and Erdem Topsakal (Mississippi State University), has assembled an interesting and informative program of more than 100 papers, covering a wide range of topics. It is hoped that the conference will stimulate interdisciplinary collaborations in research.

The success of this conference relies on the dedication and efforts of numerous people. In particular, Ahmed Al-Ostaz and Erdem Topsakal (technical program chairs), Jianxia Xue (sponsors and exhibitor chair), Joseph Gladden (industrial panel chair), Hank Ducey (administrator and local arrangement chair), Carrie Long (finance chair), Mathew Inman (web Master) and Rick Duke (Director of Insight Park) who have devoted countless hours to every aspect of the conference. Their contributions are too numerous to delineate here. I would simply say that, without them, this conference would have not been possible. Special thank is Professor Atef Elsherbini the co-chair of the conference. We would like to express our thanks to the session organizers, student paper competition committee members, session chairs and to our sponsors. We are looking forward to welcoming you to oxford.
