The Effect of Grain Size on Tensile Strength of Rice Hull Paperboard
Research Track
Abstract
Rice hulls were sieved into four groups based on particle sizes: 3-5 mm, 1-3 mm, 0.7-1 mm, and smaller than 0.7 mm. Paperboard sheets were made from each individual group with 50% paper and 50% rice hulls by weight. A tensile test was then performed on each 1”x5” specimen. The tensile index decreases as rice-hull particle size increases. The increases from the largest particle size of 3-5 mm were:
● The “1-3 mm” particle-size paperboard tensile index was 38% higher.
● The “0.7-1 mm” particle size paperboard tensile index was 72% higher.
● The “<0.7 mm” particle size paperboard tensile index was 90% Higher
